I Went to Talk Mental Health, I Found So Much More at The Plantation - Park Heights Urban Garden.
One thing that has been a constant lately, is being pushed to go outside My comfort zone. I did that recently by going into a community that I usually avoid, Park Heights. NAMI asked Me to give a presentation about mental health at Plantation - Park Heights Urban Garden. I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived, but, what I found was more than I expected. Not only did I find a beautiful farm in the middle of a very urban area, I found a community.
I was expecting to show up and speak to a group of adults, but, was surprised to find that the group was mainly teenagers, predominately male. I immediately adjusted the talk that I had planned so that I could be more relatable to them and we had a beautiful talk about what mental health was things that have affected our mental health and available resources from 988 to local resources, such as NAMI programming. It went so well in fact, that I'll be returning later this month to speak with a larger group.
The farm is so much more than a farm, it's a community resource. The youth are not just working on the farm, but the farm aids in feeding the community, holds community events, givebacks and more. Check them out at https://plantationparkheights.org/
Don't forget, NAMI Baltimore has tons of free community resources and events, as well as a helpline if you need someone to talk to. Visit https://namibaltimore.org/
